Our partner, GO Regulators, have developed a completely new electronic controller and thermistor for their well-established and time-tested range of electronically heated vaporising pressure regulators.
This design upgrade was driven by the need to offer our customers better and more advanced performance, the latest in technological development and industry standard communication protocols.
In this brief overview, we will highlight some of the core changes, features & benefits and applications for these modernised heated regulators.
Regulators with Modbus and CANbus Connectivity
Our heated pressure regulators are designed to supply heat to samples entering instrumentation systems. They can be used to preheat liquids, to prevent condensation of gases or to vaporise liquids prior to gas analysis. All our vaporising regulators are both CSA and ATEX approved.
Now, with the latest generation of electrically heated regulators, these are all supplied with the capability of operating under Modbus and CANbus connectivity protocols as standard. The units are also RoHS compliant.
These connection capabilities give end users the possibility to monitor and control the regulator temperatures remotely. End users will be able to adjust the temperature input from the control room via protocols, rather than needed to manually adjust the controller on the physical unit. Once the regulator has been installed and is ready for service, the available software can be utilised to:
- Change the temperature range for manual control
- Change temperature and heater settings
- Actively monitor the status of the regulator (including power percentage output and real-time temperature indication)
Monitoring distance can be up to 500 meters for CANbus or up to 1,200 meters for Modbus via RS485. Communication buses allow for in-the-field firmware updates to be deployed remotely.
Types of Heated Pressure Regulators
- Pressure Reducing – a single stage heated regulator, such as our industry-standard HPR2 model, designed to take a higher inlet pressure (P1) and reduce to a lower controlled outlet pressure (P2).
- Back Pressure – a heated back pressure regulator (or “overflow” regulator), such as our newly released HBP model, designed to maintain a constant inlet pressure (P1), offering end users a controlled and stable line pressure.
- Dual Stage – a dual stage heated pressure regulator (or two-stage regulator), such as our CV or DHR models, designed to take a higher inlet pressure (P1) and reduce to a lower controlled outlet pressure (P2). These are often installed to provide a higher level of control accuracy as the pressure is let down across two stages.
- Miniature – a miniature heated regulator, such as our MV1 model, is again designed as a pressure reducing type but comes in one of the industries smallest possible envelopes where space claim is critical.
- Sample Vaporisers – a sample vaporising box, such as our LNG model, is again designed as a pressure reducing type but comes in a pre-configured enclosure case equipped with isolation valves, relief lines, a pressure gauge and connection fittings ready for immediate installation.
- Steam Heated – not applicable to the Modbus or CANbus connectivity, but all the above configurations utilising steam heat for the regulators, rather than any electronically heated elements.
Advantages of Modbus Controllers
The launch of these new temperature controllers and heater elements boasts several unique features & benefits to our customers. Some of these include:
- Temperature controllers utilising industry standard communication protocols Modbus and CANbus which are included as standard with all new units ordered.
- Easy to connect via a modular connection to the Thermistor.
- State-of-the-art firmware controller provides much faster and accurate temperature control.
- LED flash codes (red and green) to indicate controller status with quick visual observation.
- Same mounting size to fit existing regulators already installed in the field. A conversion kit is available which contain all the required parts.
- Multiple temperature ranges covered under one single controller.
- All units will still be covered under ATEX (IECEx), CSA and RoHS approvals.
Heated Regulator Applications
Our heated pressure regulators are used in an enormous selection of applications and industries, from industrial to analytical/high-tech environments. Some of the typical applications we work with are as follows:
- Analytical Instrumentation – Controlling pressure to feed gas analysers, coating application systems.
- Gas and Liquid Sampling – Sample conditioning systems, calibration gas systems.
- Food and Beverage – Liquid CO2 feeding systems.
- Research Labs – Laboratory fluid pressure control, gas heating systems, pilot plant systems.
- Petrochemical Stations – Liquid petroleum analysers, refinery analysers.
- Let Down Stations – Pressure control stations for LNG, Ethylene, Propylene, Propane, Butane, Butadiene and Saturated Steam.
